The Mané-Katz Museum resides at Panorama Road, and overlooks the stunning landscape of the bay of Haifa. The museum opened in 1977, at the home of Mané-Katz, where the artist lived and created during the last years of his life. In 1958, Mané-Katz bequeathed his entire estate and collections to the municipality of Haifa. In August 2010, Mané-Katz Museum, which until then operated as part of the municipality of Haifa, was transferred to the management of Haifa Museums under the management of Ms. Noa Tarshis. In November, the Municipality of Haifa allocated the museum a budget to restore the building. The museum opened its doors again to the public on April 9th 2011. The building’s overall renovations included renovating the showrooms and the foundations, adding new offices and a museum shop, and establishing a café on the balcony overlooking the magical scenery of Haifa’s bay. When the renovations were completed, elegant exhibitions spaces, which made it possible to properly exhibit Mané-Katz works and collections, were fashioned.

History

Mané-Katz was one of the most prominent artists of the “School of Paris”, a group of young artists, some Jewish, who came to Paris from Eastern and Central Europe in the beginning of the twentieth century. This school changed the face of art in Paris during the period between the two world wars, and grounded the status of Paris as the global capital of art, which draws to it fresh and extraordinary creative forces.

Mané-Katz decided to immigrate to Israel in 1957, after he came into an agreement with the mayor of Haifa Abba Hushi that he would bequeath his entire estate and works to the city of Haifa, while the city will provide him with a house and after his death establish a museum that would commemorate his name and work. In 1977, the museum was opened, and in 2010 it was renovated, and its showrooms were renewed, the foundations were improved, and a café that sprawls into the balcony was opened.

Collection and Exhibits

From its inception, the museum has held many exhibitions revolving around the works of Mané-Katz, the artists affiliated with “The School of Paris”, their extensive influence on Israeli art, as well as art exhibits from a wide variety of fields.

When Haifa Museums received management over the museum, Svetlana Reingold was chosen to act as the curator of the museum. She formulated a plan for the changing exhibitions, which focus on modern art and the world of culture and engages with selected issues from the history of art, with an intimate affinity to the works of Mané-Katz. The exhibitions lace Katz’ work with interdisciplinary themes from the fields of art, literature, music, philosophy, ethnology and history.

The exhibitions fashion a meeting space between the works of Mané-Katz and the works of other artists working in the field of contemporary art, from a desire to engage in an artistic dialogue between different periods and points of view. Some of the exhibitions that have been showcased since its reopening include: “Chagall, Modernism, and the Story of the Bible”, “The Great Masters of the Jewish Art in the 19th Century and its Origins”, “Following the School of Paris—Israeli Art in the 30s and 40s”, and “The Jewish Avant-Garde”.

Mané-Katz Museum’s rich collection includes the fascinating works of Katz as well as his remarkable private collection. The items in his collection include: oil paintings, gouaches, pastels, sketches, watercolors, sculptures made by Mané-Katz, antique furniture, carpets, etc. Moreover, the museum also holds a collection of unique and important Judaica art including menorahs, Tes Torah, Torah Crown, pomegranates, ornamental Jewish curtains that cover the ark in the synagogue (parochet) and Jewish marriage certificates (Ketubot).
